Tips for Preventing Mold Growth

Unfortunately, mold is a common problem in humid climates. However, if you stay vigilant and learn how to prevent mold, you might never have to deal with the hassle of removing it. Mold remediation can be costly and invasive, so by doing a little mold prevention you can save yourself a lot of time and money. Here are some tips for keeping your home mold free, even in humid environments.

  • Increase airflow to decrease moisture. Homes today are better-constructed, made with more insulation and locked tight against outside air. However, that means there is little airflow to keep moisture down. By using fans, a dehumidifier, or open windows, you can keep even a small amount of air flowing through your home. Drying up moisture is the first step to preventing mold growth.
  • Keep susceptible surfaces dry. Wood and fabrics are the most common materials that mold attaches to. Keep areas with these materials well-ventilated to prevent moisture building up. Store fabrics in a dry place, such as a linen closet outside of the bathroom. When you shower, make sure you crack a window or run an exhaust fan to keep all of that steam from creating mold.
  • Monitor areas with unavoidable moisture. The areas around pipes, plumbing, showers, and sinks are all likely to get wet, either from leaks or condensation. Check these areas frequently to make sure that they’re staying dry.

By following these tips, you can prevent the growth of mold and halt the need for costly remediation. Call MoldXpertsNY for advice on keeping your home mold free!
