Is Formaldehyde Affecting Your Indoor Air Quality?

Formaldehyde is a manufacturing chemical that can irritate your eyes, skin, and throat. If you spend a lot of time exposed to formaldehyde, it can lead to certain cancers. But what does this have to do with your indoor air quality?

It turns out that formaldehyde is found in a lot more places than you might expect. In fact, this chemical is lurking all around your home. Here are some common sources of airborne formaldehyde:

  • Certain fabrics, like those used in curtains or your upholstery
  • Manufactured wood products found in some furniture, such as plywood and particleboard
  • Laminate flooring
  • Household products (detergents, cosmetics, paints, glues, and more)
  • Tobacco smoke

Newly manufactured wood and floor boards have a higher concentration of formaldehyde due to the fact that only a short amount of time has passed since the manufacturing process.

While formaldehyde isn’t usually deadly, it can lead to some unpleasant health effects when your home isn’t well-ventilated. For example, irritation of your eyes, nose, throat, and skin are common short-term effects, but they can lead to more damaging problems and even cancer in some cases.
